Winter Workday at Breen Prairie

Curb your cabin fever with a morning outdoors! Volunteers will remove invasive brush from Breen Prairie. We'll end the day with warm beverages.

Invasive brush removal involves using various hand tools (handsaws or loppers) to manually cut invasive brush so native species can thrive.  No experience necessary. Instruction will be provided. New and seasoned volunteers welcome.

About Breen Prairie

Breen Prairie Farm encompasses 140 acres of native dry, rocky prairie, woodland and working lands. Helen Reichardt donated the farm to Iowa Natural Heritage Foundation in 1989 to permanently protect and preserve the land’s natural beauty and wildlife habitat. It is now owned and stewarded by INHF.

Please:

  • Dress for the weather and wear layers, long pants, sturdy boots with warm socks, a winter hat that can be worn under a helmet and lined work gloves (we will have some spares)
  • Bring a water bottle and gear that you don’t mind getting dirty or scratched up (feel free to bring extra handsaws or loppers, if you have them)

Details:

  • No experience necessary
  • Training will be provided
  • You will be asked to sign a liability waiver

Directions:

Breen Prairie Farm is located approximately 3 miles north of Monticello on Hwy 38 in Jones County.

From Monticello, drive north on IA-38 out of town about 3 miles. The property is located less than a quarter mile past Rock Road, on the east side of the road. A wooden sign is visible. Look for INHF event signage and staff.

Volunteers should park along the highway just past the entrance to the field on the property.
